In this piece, I am looking to capture the stages of development of an important life decision, the change in a state of mind, and the phases of adaptation that take us to the first step in the right direction. That first step comes with a renewed sense of freedom, excitement, clarity, serenity, and confidence toward our personal path — a new awakening.
I use pyrography (burning with a heated metallic point) to draw my designs onto the wood and use stains to color it, leaving the wood grain to show through in certain areas. The subjects of my pieces are usually women and girls of diverse races, highlighting topics that I consider meaningful.

I had the incredible honor of showcasing this piece in the De Young Museum of San Francisco, in their Open exhibition from September 2023 to January 2024.
